We had a great Open House in May - the first one at the new farm! It was a smaller open house, but that just served to make it cozier! Thanks to our friends and volunteers for making this a fun and successful gathering and funraiser!

We had some new friends who arrived just in time to help make the Open House a huge success! Elvis and Lil' Bits were born just days before our event and were very popular with the guests! Here's more about the new babies...

Lula and her baby Elvis

In late 2007, the Loudoun County Animal Control office was investigating a situation involving 48 neglected Thoroughbred horses. The court eventually awarded custody of all the horses to the County, and the animals were divided into groups and sent out to various organizations for care and rehabilitation. The Equine Rescue League received three mares, two of which were pregnant.

The ERL has had many years of experience in dealing with expectant mothers in poor condition, along with the related challenges involved with safely delivering the foals. Fortunately, the mares were almost four months away from their due dates, which gave them time to eat well and regain their condition and energy. The ERL fed them several small meals a day, along with free choice of high-quality hay. The results couldn't have been better - the mares gave birth within a week of each other in early May 2008 - just in time to welcome friends and neighbors to the Open House!

Plum and her filly Lil' Bits

The babies, a filly (Lil' Bits) and a colt (Elvis), currently reside at the ERL with their mothers, and all four horses will eventually become available for adoption after the foals have been weaned.
